The Wish Mandala is finally ready to have the Wish Egg! When I declare that Mandala is finished, immediately rain fall down hard even though Sunlight was still on. I took it as a good omen.

Securing the Wish Mandala

My Mandala may look like it was made by simply placing found objects, but in actuality, there are several tricks that I used to secure my piece against weather. I am not doing anything to prevent decaying of natural materials, since that is part of my piece: Insects and fungus slowly degrade the materials. However, I make sure that each units stays at same position for a few months.

One of my methods I use is to peg. I sharpened one side of twigs and bigger branches, and use them as pegs.

For instance, to set up the pole, I used these homemade tools and dug a little bit more than 1 foot deep, almost exact same diameter to the pole. Then I pegged around the pole. Each pegs presses each other and secure the pole to the ground.

In circle part, I used the combination of pegging and also tension setting. Each wood is tightly placed to each other. The tension locks all.

I make pieces while thinking about storms and people accidentally bumping it. So, if someone tries to kick my piece to destroy it, (Why would they want to do such a thing by the way. They will have negative Karma.) they'd better have steel toe shoes. They are securely grounded and it is not easy to move.

Another Mandala: the return of the mono-eye

I made another Mandala for my upcoming group show at Tenri gallery, 13 st., btw 5th and 6th ave. (6th av. side.) 5" x 7", color pencil on paper. It will be sold for $50 (special price) for benefit for Japan. The show stars on 13th. I think I will call this " the return of the mono-eye." Mono-eye is the animal-plant hybrid that appeared to my old surreal period of my works. It came back!!!

I finished this piece today, color pencil drawing, 5" x 7", for the charity for Japan part of my up coming show at Tenri gallery, 13th st, btw 5th ave and 6 ave, next to one of the the New school building. The piece will be sold for $50 (This show only price. ) The show start 13th of September. The reception is on 16th from 6 pm. Come and see!

A Commitment of an environmental artist.

As I consider myself as an environmental artist. Tobe true to the claim, I try not use power tools and mechanized vehicles, as much as I can and I try to use only natural materials for my piece. My piece is about the harmony and interconnection of the world. I try to make sure my piece has low impact to the installed site. Quite often, nature cohabits with my piece and creatures take refuge under my piece.

Yes, I sometimes have to break self imposed rules. Tree trunks were cut by a chainsaw, and I used monofilaments for the support of the vertical cotton cords for this Wish Mandala.

But rest of woods are all hand cuts, hand carried or a bike carried.

A famous Zen master, Daisetsu Suzuki, wrote an essay in 1930’s about his worry toward the uaban life. He said when people start living an apartment and have no contact with lands, people stop caring surrounding. He concluded that one must maintain the contact with lands, in order to understand the interconnection of the universe. I was ammused that he said this in 1930.

Yesterday and today, I was digging holes to place trees as a flag poles.

There was a thunder storm at the midnight. I was looking at lightning for a hour at 1am till 2pm.

I noticed the clear difference of the hardness of the ground before and after the rain next day. This might not news to you if you were a framer of a gardener, but I was enjoying the fact I physically experienced the differences, and in fact I posses the knowledge of people who work with lands. As I was digging holes, setting up flags, looking at the movement of wishing flags, and imagining winds carry away all wishes, I was also thinking of all the people who would dig ground, like coffee farmers in Guatemala. I was imagining their lands, their sweats, their lives. With my action, I share the solidarity with them. I am aware that I am romanticizing, but my sweat is also real. By working on the field, I become one of them. I was also thinking of the time I buried dead puppies that my dog had. I had a collie, named Lassie when I was a teenager. Collies tend to have large number of puppies at the same time, and sometimes few were born with much undeveloped state like Kangaroo babies. Once Lassie had 11 puppies, but four were born prematurely and did not survive. I dag small holes and buried them. I had a joyful time with survived 7 puppies, but I also remember the sad moment. Dogs can cry. I saw tears in Lassie’s eyes when she noticed those puppies were not moving.

There was another thunderstorm this late afternoon. I was reading the air, guessing when the rain starts. Many people had commented me that they feel sorry that I had to work under such hot weather. Yes, it is hot out here, my bandana is completely soaked, and even my leather belt is drenched, but the truth is that I am totally enjoying being out side, listening sounds that woods makes, feeling breeze, noticing both sunlight and shades, observing small changes in my surrounding. I am making the connection to the land. I have a good feeling with my piece.

I arrive Annmarie two days ago, and I am happy to be back in my creation mode. My friend Luis told me a one technique that I found effective to get back to the creative state after a break; playing the exact music when you stooped. ( happened to be "Fernando" by ABBA) I suppose you can use another sensory method like using same luminous or same scent.

First thing I did was to check out the condition of the installation, which was totally fine after all weather elements. Also, I reset up the studio area, and then start working on re-calibrating well used stamps for flag making. It took me a full day to clean up, re-carve all stamps, and I made a few new. I was at the flag making station this weekend, and I met a girl who wishes for a pink duck. So far I had made a dog, a cat, fish, a dinosaur and now two duck stamps for those who wants to have pets. I still need to make horse and hamster.

I have read all wishes. One common wish is finding a cure for certain diseases. One wish I got today was saying " do not get very sick again"and it was wrote by a child. May the wind grants this child wish. One lady was bit choked while writing her wish for a cure. Perhaps writing reminded her someone who has or had the condition. I hope my project can take off some weight from her mind.

Now I have a good stuck of flags made by guests. I will start incorporating them to my installation piece very soon.

Mandala project: Purification ritual

It always rains in the early stage of making my Mandala. And it is not just little drops. I expect thunderstorms. And it happened again, here in Annmarie. When the rain storm pounded on my installation ground, I took it as that was the sign that I was successfully communicated to the universe and it approved my intention, and the ground was blessed and purified. Of course one can argue it was a just a matter of humidity, pressure, and temperature, but I knew something.

Wishing Mandala

I am here as an artist in resident at Annmarie sculpture park and art center to lead their summer public art program. I will be making an environmental art installation, New Mandala with natural found objects that reflect the locality of my current surroundings, Southern Maryland, with “Wishing Flag” component that the visitors of the garden will participate. This will be my 5th outside Mandala, 6th total Mandala piece I created.

First outside Mandala at Djerassi residency, Woodside, CA.

Every new Mandala has been evolved from previous version. And here in Annmarie, I can sense that I will be achieving to the next level. For last 3 days I am researching the new elements to the piece. I always wanted to make my piece more 3 dimensional. My last piece, Wetland Mandala, at Oysterville, Washington State, courtesy of the Espy foundation, was the first one which has significant height element.

I could have certainly repeated that structure, however I wanted to make it different off course. And I found the way. By using monofilament and ropes, I will create the visual walls in 4 directions that will have the illusion of mass when one sees it from the distance.
Another new elements to the “Wising Mandala” (working title, maybe Spider Mandala is better since I am putting strings everywhere) is “Wishing Flag” element. Public is asked to create a flag that they write their wishes on and decollate with their drawing and stamps that I carved.

The idea is that the wind carries out their wishes to the universe as like a Tibetan prayer flag.

The project is going forward!!

It is amazing to be so digitized at the residency. My first residency in 2002, I used to bring all CDs. (I think I-pod did not exist yet.) I used calling cards and a payphone. I used a film camera. (I changed all digital around 2004.)
Here at Annmarie sculpture garden and art center, I can get wi-fi as long as I am near at the main building, and if I am out of length, I can use tethering method, which is rather temperamental and slow, but I can get online. (Or I can just use my droid for basic internet stuff.) So, now I just need to get a solar panel charger. (My inner gadget boy is calling....)
So, here is another installment of my video project...A tortoise, Bobby,is flying over Annmarie.

I like being here doing only my thing. I actually picked up few calls asking me to work for them. I told them I am in a residency in MD or "Merry Land" as I said, and I am merry. So, today I left the place at first time. I went for 5 minutes bicycle ride to a post office. I worked on a painting a bit, made a video. I saw a dear as well.

I arrived at Annmarie in the mid afternoon smoothly, thanks to my friends, Tara and Stephan, who kindly drove me down here. I took a train to Newark and met them up there. The worst part of my trip was from my Slope apartment to #2,3 line subway's Bergen station with a 90 pounds not-so-roll-well suitcase, 40 pounds duffle bag, and a 64 inch tube contains canvas. It normally takes 4 minutes, but took me 17 minutes today. But I knew once I get on the train it would be easy. Once we were in a car, we drove down 95, and took local freeway from Delaware, looking young corn field. Looking at Maryland map, I am in Southern Maryland where Patuxent River meets Chesapeake Bay. I am here, Annmarie Garden, in association with the Smithsonian Institution, Sculpture Park and Arts Center, to make a public outside art installation. I will also lead a public participation program which will be a part of my installation. I will be making new version of my nature Mandala using found objects from the property, and I will ask visitors to make "wishing flag" to attach to my piece. "Wishing flag" idea is coming from the Tibettan prayer flag which normally has a good fortune prayer printed on. "Wishing flag" hope to grant wishes of vistors, either their personal fortune or more psychological wish like finding themselves as wind blows. I met a few staff members today, and they pleasantly welcomed me, and we discussed about the project a little. After that, I did a little bit of the location hunt for the project. I noticed there were so many pinecones. I will most certainly use them. My living quarter was descrived as "rustic" on their website and literature, so I was imagining a wood cabin with wood burning stove. But, I would use "simple" to depict the place. The studio area is quite specious and has many lights. So, I will be making 2-D art at night from the studio. I think my stay here will be cool!!

I made the crane piece specifically for this show. I depicted flying crane as a symbol of rebirth, wishing for the recovery of Japan.

Art Exhibition to help the Earthquake and Tsunami victims in Japan

Venue: ISE Cultural Foundation Front Space Gallery

On March 11, the massive earthquake of magnitude 9,0 and the huge Tsunami hit Northeast of Japan and caused catastrophic damages. Thousands of people were killed and many more are still missing.

ISE Cultural Foundation is organizing 1-day art exhibition of "ART FOR JAPAN" in order to raise the fund for the earthquake and Tsunami victims in Japan.

The artists will donate their artworks and exhibit at ISE Cultural Foundation Front Space Gallery on Tuesday, March 29.

All of the artworks will be sold either $20 or $40 in cash only.
*ISE Cultural Foundation will match up the same amount of the all sales from the event and will donate 100% of the fund to each non-profit organization in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures through the Japanese American Association of New York.

One Liner series

The idea is to present a situation that each animals on paintings expressing one line phrases trying to win love and affection. The results are humorous.

I finished this piece for my current group show in Willamsburg.

I finished at 1 pm on 1/11/2011 and this is the first piece this year. (well, was not 1:11, more like 1:52)

I actually started this piece on November of 2009 when I was an artist in resident of New York Mills regional cultural center. This is one of three series. Here are other two finished work with the new work with unfinished state.

My one month residency in a little town in Minnesota was productive, but after I came back to New York, I did not touch this yellow piece for a year until I have this group show.

I always knew what I wanted to do with the piece, adding cloud and water elements, yet to actually finish up, I needed to have a deadline.

I am happy with the result, and i hope you can come to the show. I also have another piece I did last September.

VCCA's 2011 Wachtmeister Award for Excellence in the Arts will be given to a visual artist working in two or three-dimensions. Photography will not be considered for the 2011 Award.

Criteria: Applicants must have worked professionally for the past 15 years and have demonstrated achievements in their field. This award is for artists who have not previously been in residence at VCCA.

The Wachtmeister Award includes a fully-funded residency (up to 30 days) at VCCA, a $1,000 honorarium, and reimbursed travel expenses of up to $750. Total value of the award is $7,150.

he Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts offers up to fifty juried residencies per year to working artists from across the country and around the world. Residencies are awarded to visual artists, writers, composers, interdisciplinary artists, and arts or arts education scholars.

Residencies are available for two-, four-, six-, or eight-weeks stays. Each resident receives a $100 stipend per week, free housing, and a separate studio.

The Center can house up to five artists at any given time. Artists interested in applying can learn more by reading the information provided here regarding the facility and the local setting.

Reflection on my painting

To Be Idle is a Short Road to Death and to Be Diligent is the Way of Life

The title is coming from Buddha. It took me several years to make this piece. (Well, I was not working on this every day.) I went two residency with this canvas, starting Bemies Center, Omaha. I finished most of the part at Djerassi CA. Yet, even today, I am adding elements sometimes. The left top Chinese character means "movement" or " to move". Silver part is a stream based after the 18th century Japanese master, Ogata Korin. Lotus flowers represents the enlightenment. Pain tree represents living. This is a large painting: 48" x 56" I am very happy with this piece.

This piece is called "All Actions are Sacred " It painted by acrylic with embroidery on stitched canvas. The size is 32" x 32"

I started this piece when I was at

Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. One day, I was working, a big snake showed up at my studio from nowhere. It was May, and Virginia was like Summer in Northeast already. So, I saw snakes often on a property cooling down under the shade of trees. I guess that particular snake was eager to find cooler place. The symbolism of snake is interesting one in many cultures. It is often portrayed as a evil being , but also often one who knows some profound secrets. In this painting, the snake represents the mysterious

messenger send by divine one to human. The title was suggested by a poet friend I met there.

On going show in Williamsburg

I am very pleased with the piece I am currently showing at WAH Center, Williamsburg.
I started this piece in Summer of 2008 at the Anderson Center, Red Wing, MN. And I finally finished the two days before the show. I was not painting this piece for last 17 months, but I needed to have "cure" time. I truly believe that I achieved the next level I wanted. The rendering of flower captured the essence of "Live". The complexity of elements were well balanced, and well composed. I do not have the best reproduction here yet as I took this photo 2 hours before I delivered to the center with my snap shot camera. I also feel very good about the fact I finished two pieces already in this year. (And having two shows.) It is very good start. Tibetan might say "It is auspicious." I actually flew with a high lama by chance. Then I received a teaching from him on the new years day. I diffidently started my January auspicious way.

How's your 2010 so far? I am feeling pretty good. I finished two brand-new works and I am showing those two works at two group shows. One is called LUMEN, at Middlesex County College, Edison, NJ. Another one is at The Williamsburg Art and Historical Center,Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY.

LUMEN, curated by Asha Gunpat. January 21 - February 11 Monday through Friday 11am to 5pm at Middlesex County College, Edison, NJ. The reception will be from 5-8pm on Thursday January 28. 2600 Woodbridge Avenue, Edison, New Jersey 08818-3050. It is a light sculpture show. My piece is some what inspired by aesthetic of the the 2010(Movie)even though I did not have conscious connection of this year to be 2010. (But most likely my subconscious mind send my psyche to this aesthetic, all white minimalism.) It is a white box that has the illusion of floating and had a keyhole. I expected the curiosity of the viewer will make them want to see through the keyhole. And when they see the keyhole, they will discover the fantasy landscape behind.

Studio visit with Janos Stone

I went to Mr. Janos Stone's studio at Greenpoint part of the Brooklyn. The location reminded me of a small town in Midwest instead of Brooklyn.

It’s 3:41 AM and I am still poking around at the studio. It took me 12 hours to pack and clean but at this point, I am just staying at the studio. It is natural to feel some kind of attachment. Now the place is clean and empty. And this place is so quiet. I never heard the fire engine sounds eventhough the fire station is half block away which is a good thing but it amazed me. (They have yellow engines by the way.)
The local people get annoyed with the sound of trains, but I enjoyed. It brings me some kind of nostalgic feeling. The street lights of this town are quite bright. And they put all Christmas lights, so the place is even brighter.

I am leaving this town in a morning. I will visit my friend in St. Paul. This would be another interesting episode as my dear friend is very energetic. He is my Dean, as in a character of “On the Road.” Associating him bring me positive energy.
I have a few things I would like to do once I go back to NYC. All of them are something to do with food. I want to go to All you can eat sea food place in Korean town, I want to cook something special, using all fancy ingredients that I did not have for a month. I really like to make the first episode of my cooking show. I will buy a camcorder finally after my return.

Staying here gave me some new ideas, and I also have several unfinished works. I would like to keep my momentum going. I need to do some major reorganizing, remodeling of a room.
I had a productive month. I met interesting people. The next phase just started.

Tonight was a play night at the center. I must say this place provide a lot of stimulation to the local communities. Yesterday night had a dance class for little people,and a beaded jewelry class.

Tonight"s show was by Mixed Blood Theater from Minneapolis called "Theory of Mind" by Ken LaZebnik.

At the Q and A session (Skyler Nowinski, Taj Rule, and Raul Ramos)

It was a story of high school kids' night out. The boy had asperger and he thought he was having a date with a girlfriend, though she didn't think that way as story reveled.) It was quite entertaining and it was a cute story that I could totally relate to. I had handful of expediencies with his situation. Funniest one will be the night I went out with 6 cute girls in college and I thought myself that I was so hot, and then they turned out to be gay, so I was totally off from their love interests. Let get back to the story; the show certainly constructed around the fact the boy has asperger, and the main theme was the friendship, and the message was to remove the stigma of having asperger , and to celebrate individuality and to embrace the special gift. He was strange but charming. I was watching them from my special viewing area, my studio.

This early morning, I was listing "French in Action". I finished Lesson 14.

As I said before, my schedule is shifting one hour every day. I went to the bed 6:30 Am. My head was hurting around 4:30 but I really wanted to finish the piece I was working on. Here it is.

I was listing "French in Action", partially because, for the next episode of the "The Adventure of Lt. Ishida." The next plot is that Lt. Ishida was forced crash land (again)because his air plane collided with the UFO. And on the desert, Lt. Ishida encountered the alien who was in baby clothing and spokes only French. So, Lt. Ishida had to communicate with this alien with his limited knowledge of French. So, I was trying to brushing up my French which is very limited as Lt. Ishdia's.

New York Mills: Day 20

I don’t have many days left.
My progress here is all right, but I feel that I am 3 to 5 days behind.Most likely I can nail down another piece in next 48 hours, so I am all right. And I came up with a couple of fine ideas for next projects. So, I am content in general, however another part of me saying “You, poky monkey!.” I have to say that choosing my avatar as a possum for a few days was not brilliant. I was poky. Now I am a black panther.By the way, I seriously recommend you to imagine yourself as wild animal. I am aware that you might think I am wacky, which I don’t deny, but this animal thing can bring you positive attitude and make you happy.

Yesterday, I left the studio at 4am after done with the green piece at 3, left studio at 4am. I spend about 15 minutes to look up the sky to see Leonid Meteor Shower. I did not see the metro shower, I saw metro drip. I went to bed at 5am. It seems like I am shifting one hour every day, go to bed one hour late, and wake up one hour late than day before. I wonder what my true nature of sleeping pattern is. In Brooklyn, I go to bed 12, because I turn in to pumpkin at the midnight.

Other day I did my laundry.
$1.50 the total amount of my laundry, here in New York Mills, MN. Yes, that's included dryer! By the way, I tell you one of many my secrets. I wear leather pants, so that I have less laundry to do. (Well, very fortunately, my East Asian body does not creates odor in general.)
They have a lot of machines at this place. But I wonder who would use this facility. I have not seen the people using this place yet. (Not like I am monitoring them. However in my neighborhood, there were always people at anytime of the day or week.)
The following is the profile of people who would use this place: hunters whose partners refuse to let them use the home machine for their dirty soiled hunting gears, sexually active teen ager who need to hind the evidence from the parents, cheating spouse who need to hind the evidence, a serial killer with a spouse at home who need to hind the evidence, Us, the artist in residents at the center.
It is located right next to the center, so it was super convenient for me. Also, you can get a number for friendly Guinea pigs to purchase.

This salmon pate in tube from Sweden contains salmon, cod roe, saithe roe. (Those of you, who do not know what Tarako is, watch this video.) (All though you may be still puzzled more after watching the video.)
The center sells some food items from Finland because this town is proud of its Finish heritage. But I guess the center also sales other Scandinavian stuff. You can get his tube at Ikea, if you are curious.

I taught kids today. I conducted a little painting session. I asked them to make colors from primary colors, and asked them to make different valued mixing with water, and asked them to paint what they really like. Some kid painted an i-pod, some kid painted a basketball. I think they enjoyed.

Today was very sunny outside. Gee, it's been 13 days I came here, and today was 12th active day.

My progress has been slow until today. 17 more active days left. I have clear objectives now.

Things I learned today about country life.

#1 You do not use white toilet paper when you are on a field during hunting season.

#2 You do go around woods wearing white.

Don't worry about me my dear friend, I don't go beyond two points, my house and studio. As I said before, first thing I do in a morning is to cook my meal for lunch and dinner.

My own private prairie home companion show:

The NY Mills Regional Cultural Center is the active place.

They have some kind of activity in every other day.

Monday night is the knitting night, Tuesday and Thursday have dance classes, and they have a concert on Saturday.

So, the last nigh there was concert with a folk group duo named “Still on a Hill”, Kelly Mulhollan and Donna Stjerna from Arkansas.

I was at upstairs during the concert but it was as if I was at the balcony area in a theater, so I could listen all music while I was busy working on my piece.

The duo was very engaging on the stage. There were audience participation and seemed to have a lot of visual aids. (I was listening but was not looking.) They have a lot of stories to tell.

Here is some song they played that I found on youtube. They meet up with local characters and they write song about them. This was a song about a man in Houston.

What most intrigued me was the story about an old man, Mr. Ed Stilley, who decided to make installments and give them to kids after having the vision in near death, being a giants tortoise with kids on his back and the god told him that the god will let him go the other side of the ashore if old man promise to do good for others. The duo met him, and they made a song. They played with this old man’s installments that he made. Here is the image of this old man from the duo’s webpage. I came down after the show and chat with the duo a little bit. They projected their warmness. I told them some unknown reason, my 2/3 musician friends are blue grass, neo-county people. They mention their friends’ name who sounded like have music joint in Dumbo.

While I was hearing audiences’ laughter, I was thinking that “wow, this is like my personal prairie home companion show.”

I am enjoying my stay.

New York Mills: Day 7

I take the pink souped- up bicycle from the cute yellow house to the studio at the center every day. (Look at photos on Day 4) I have a very short commute, and I make lunch and dinner in a morning and stay at the studio till I am no longer functional to continue to do anything. Here is the documentation of my commute in this morning. I encounter to the train which I am enjoying hearing the sound.

Normally I wake up in between 7-9, and spend one hour for making lunch and dinner while also making breakfast and having tea and coffee. Today, I made pasta.

And I stay at my studio until very late. I enjoy riding back a bike home on the totally silent road with absolutely no car.

Today's free style haiku: MMs are not nuts , yo! anyone wants them?

I conducted my first outreach workshop to about 28 of 10th graders. I ask them to do a several drawing projects, include the classic methods such as a blind drawing and not pencil lifting drawing. Kids responded well, but I noticed that their attention span is rather short, so I needed to assign new projects in short period of times. Patient is virtue in creating visual art. Repetitive activities give perfections. I have to convey this concept to kids to make them better artists.

Anyway, I enjoyed doing my workshop. I will work with them 3 times more. And tomorrow I will teach at another school.

After my class, the coordinator lady from the center took me to the bigger supermarket. I bought some bulk stuff. One of them was (I thought) nuts mix. A minute ago, I popped them into my mouth and I discovered they had a lot of MMs. I had to remove them. And I also notice that they are only peanuts and raisins, no other kinds of nuts. So, that’s the story behind my haiku today. She also took me to her house to show me her flock of hens and she gave me still warm eggs. (See image and Video below)

I tried to send out some mail today. I went to the post office crossing a big parking lot from the center. But it was closed. 1-2pm lunch hours. The place must be run by one person or two crews. Rain started hard, so I don’t think I will go to the post office again.

Yesterday, I finished a very first piece; a small painting. I actually feel not comfortable with this piece as wearing new shoes. The subject matter is not new, colors are mine, but mannerism is not typical of my works. This piece can be the new departure. This can be one shot mutation. I don’t know yet. What I know is that I am happy that this happened.

My New York Mills, MN, Studio

Free style haike of the day: Found cat hairs on my gears, I miss my kitty

I was actually very nervous about coming to this residency because I would be alone here. I have done solo residency before and I did not enjoy so much. At my last solo residency, I did not get to know people there until last 3 days of my stay. I was at off season in the summer vacationing village. 2/3 of businesses were not even operating. It was so cold. No one was on a street. Only person who talked to me was a village drunk guy who hanged around near a bridge. (He said, out of blue, he would beat up guys who would mess with me because they don't like my kind.) I was not quite sure what he meant by my kind, but I think he meant by Asian. I was 98% white place. I enjoyed his friendship. Without him I had to talk to frogs. And they would only talk to girl frogs anyway. (It was very cold, but in my 3rd week, they started to come out.) There was no cell phone reception. I had to go walk about 35 minutes on a hiking trail to get reception. I had managed to create many good pieces, however I was not happy, in fact I was rather miserable till the last 3 days that I finally met nice people. I also have to mention that I had a worst burger in my life which was a crime against the cattle that died for me at a restaurant in this village. It is rather difficult to screw up making burgers.

But this time, I am totally cool, cool as a cucumber. And I have to say the main reason I am cool is that I have a lap top with internet connections. Face Book probably only existed in Ivies' Net works when I was in a last solo residency, but now I can see what my friends are up to. I can write blog and tell you my tales. I have good cell receptions. I don't have to go walk for 35 minutes or standing in a rain in a particular spot on middle of the road which I have done in a different residency. I am still connected.

Point two is that I had met people already. I was invited to join the card game called 31 at the municipal run bar and liquor shop. The young waitress did not know what I was asking first, but she managed to find Guinness for me. (I was not sure if she did not understand my accent or she was just too young to know all products, but first she said they don't have Guinness.) And a lady in our group bought my drink and she paid $5 with her drink and received changes with paper bills. I was amazed. I had never played this game called 31, so two people in our group helped me up. I was still not sure what I was doing, but I lasted for while. (You have 3 lives to play and person with lowest hands loses one at an each round.) At the end, every one offered me a ride back which first I declined as I just need to walk 3 blocks anyways, but since it was raining, I accepted from the same lady who bought me a drink. I had a bit of trouble opening the door since it was the second time I unlocked the door. She waited for me to make sure that I entered a house before she drove away. I appreciated that I was taking care of.

Let's get back to the mine subject that I was talking about; reasons I am fine with the situation.

I also have a great space as well here. (As you can see on the top of this page.) Once I read or heard that Picasso bought a castle, and he just filled up one room to another when he ran out spaces. At this residency, I can just add one table to another if I run out the space. Compare this with my work space in Brooklyn! You see, why I am so chilled.

Here are some images form New York Mills. So far, I am spending most my time at the studio area which is the second floor of the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center. (I will refer as the center from now on.) And go back to my sleeping place which is a little yellow house. I commute either on foot ( less than 10 minutes walk) or by bike ( 3-4 minutes). I have to cross the fleet train track from/to the studio. When I do, it gives me the sense that I am in a small town very much and and also make me nostalgic.

I have this house for a month. One bed room, one living room, kitchen, and little study area. I was told the center purchased the property for $10,000 and remodeled by volunteers.

Actually snow had stopped.
I have bad Wi-Fi connection which probably good thing for my creation. But I have to finish my NYFA grant. Good thing is uploading images part was done before I left to come here.

Today I started actively working on pieces. In the afternoon, there were Halloween party for kids at the center. Excited kids were doing something. I was tuned out from all noises. It seems like they had face painting and making monsters out of cookies as I came down to find out if they had some coffee at the party when things were ending. They did not have coffee, however a lady offered me to make fresh one which I happy accepted. And I ate too much of the left over cookies in a shape of pumpkin with some frost added. They were highly addictive at a first place and I did not have proper lunch, I devoured them. (Piggy piggy) The coffee they used was from Finland which they sales at the center’s gift shop area. It was dark which satisfied me. I drank them very first and a lot as well. (Piggy Piggy) Beside this, the day was rather quietly passed by. My art supply order arrived today as well. So, the second gear is on now.

First active day of my residency.

(My very first free style haiku in New York Mills.)

I am intending to write reports of my artist in residency from New York Mills in this month. I may cover a little bit off topics from purely art related which will include my pop sociological observations, and comments about whatever in my head.

I arrived at New York Mills, Minnesota after 12 hours from Brooklyn.

I will be at New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, here, in a fine town in Minnesota.

Before I came in, my contact wrote me that I should bring anything unusual that I need since there are "out in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE." And She mentioned 3 times that we were "Middle of Nowhere" when she picked me up from the next town where I reached by a van service from the twin cities.One way, this is very remote place, another way it is not. Here is my expansion of my thoughts:

This place is 4 hours way from twin cities. Population is 1100. A little down town shops, which are 4 or 6 of them, completely closed down on 8:15 pm. One subway shop seems the only the national chain. The gas stations brand was unknown to me. There is no movie theater. It seems to me agriculture is the main industry. So, one sense this is very typical rural America. However, it is very much like a rest of US, Wall Mart is near by town, every family have two cars or trucks, everyone has green lawns. (For us, Brooklyn people don't have cars and lawns, but we are not typical about house and car issue.) I also had stayed a very truly remote village in Nepal where only way to get there is to walk up the steep steps on a mountains. So, compared with that, this is nothing.

However I also feel strange the fact I can be in Milan in 6 hours from Brooklyn, 12 hours in Tokyo, but took me 12 hours to come to this part of the nation. The calculating actual distance is no longer useful unit to determine the practical distance. On the shuttle van service I was on from twin cities, I gathered that major airlines are shutting down regional services. I cannot blame them for cutting those route down as I know they are loosing money every day. But I can imagine the impact.

Anyway, I have two locations for me to use in this month. I was provided with a cute house as a living space, and studio space which includes with a dance studio. (hee hee hee, maybe I make a music video.) And I can totally work at house for small pieces.

I went to the local joint for lunch. As I suspected burger was good. I have a theory about burger. Burger is the good choice in Midwest as the meat is freshly killed. I also went the local super market. Meat and meat products were cheap, but vegetable and fruit were expensive and did not look good. Packaged food was same or bit less.

Little kids came to for dance lesson now. They are in at dance studio. They seems practicing something for the Christmas. The center hosts different activities. They also host concerts.

My studio space is open area of the second floor of this art center. The first floor is used as a little gift shop, gallery, and office.

As my first step, I put my reference images on a wall. This is my normal residency ritual. By starling at them, I start composing some plan, find a direction. I have one immediate idea, making a new addition to one liner series. (Here is one image from the one liner series)

This piece is called "Blue Mountain Lake". I started when I was at an artist residency, Blue Mountain Center which is located on a town called Blue Mountain Lake, in Adirondacks part of New York. My good memories were encased in this painting.

Interview with Ms. Hannah Cole

I visited Ms. Hannah Cole's Studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn, and interviewed her about her art.
Her studio building hosts about 50 studios.

Ms.Hannah Cole is a painter, originally from Boston, had lived in Italy. She just had her solo show at Greene Contemporary Gallery which is located in LES. I was intrigued by a few works I saw there and I would like to hear where her ideas are coming from.

A funny coincidence was that I was looking at Ucross residency website, and found her photo on their site. Ms. Cole was there in this spring session.

I was very attracted with this painting at her solo show. It was quite a large piece.

Adventurer of Lt.Ishida: Episode1

I, Lieutenant Ishida, was called to pilot the Montello Airline’s first flight from Floyd Bennett field in Brooklyn, NY on September 2nd,20xx. To oblige my mission, I took off from the undisclosed base with my Fiat CR.42 Falco with a booster fuel tank. Soon after taking off, I noticed that the oil temperature gauge was not functioning correctly. I yanked a few times on the gauge, and it showed the normal temperature. I was flying under this circumstance for a while, thinking that I should not rely on duct tape so much.
And then suddenly the tachometer went into the red zone. Soon the oil pressure totally dropped, and the engine stopped. I was forced to perform a crash landing. I had no control of the craft. My airplane dove down into a corn field....

I don’t know how I did it, but I managed to minimize the impact to the ground. My craft, however, was totally stuck in the field. I checked my body; nothing was broken. I tried the radio; no function. I came out from the cockpit. My Falco was not so lucky. All the blades of the propeller were broken off or bent. I was still happy that there was no serious damage to the craft itself and probably I could probably fly with a new propeller. I need to bring my vehicle to the nearest airport. But I had no idea where I was. I had to find a way. Where was I, anyway?

I was desperately needed to locate my current position. After walking several hours, I encounter friendly locals in a meadow. They were quite curious what I was up to. They wanted to know where I was from. I explained my situation. They told me I was in Burlington, Wisconsin. They said they had heard a loud noise and expressed dismay that noise might affect their productivity. I apologized and told them that I hope this kind of thing would not happen again. Then I mentioned that I needed to repair my craft to go to Brooklyn, NY so that I could bring New York people to Montello, Nevada

One local was very excited when he heard that I was headed to Nevada. It tuned out that his high school sweet heart moved to Nevada about two decades ago, and he wants me to ask around about her when I get there. I promised him that I would do what I could. Then he told me the short cut to get to the main road. They served me a cup of tea with milk. I asked for two sugar cubes. They had flower decorated sugar cubes!! I told the hostess that she has fine taste. She blushed and told me that she just loves flowers. Although the conversation was lively and I was enjoying having a few cups of fine tea in the meadow, I had to go on my mission. I thanked them and departed. They wished me luck.

I was looking for the main road. I was estimating that once I reached the main road, I could hitchhike to the airport shop or a junk shop and fabricate whatever I needed. Still, I was starting to think that I may need to have a crane to lift up my Fiat CR.42 Falco -- or 23 donkeys, whichever I could find.

But I seemed to be completely lost. I must have made a wrong turn on the trail. I ended up on the bank of a big lake. As far as I could see, there were no signs of human activity. Well, actually I was wrong.

While I was studying the map and matching my location by observing the shore lines carefully (this was difficult with only a world map.), small people came out from behind. They were very cheerful and friendly. They actually suggested that I go around the shore line a few miles, so that I will meet big people. I was not sure if that was a good idea since I cannot see how big this lake was, but I didn’t seem to have an alternative course to take. I followed their advice. They also told me that if I could come with them, their Ma would make us casserole. I asked them if it came with crashed ramen noodle on top and they said "yes". I thought that this would be wonderful to have an authentic Mid-west experience, but I had a mission to carry on. So, I had to go.

The trip was rather dreadful. I encountered scorpions, snakes, spiders, hornets, and poisonous frogs. But with my strong will to rescue my craft so that I can fly the passengers from Brooklyn while they are enjoying themselves gave me courage to cross the horrible terrain. For whatever reason, I was thinking of Vegemite the legendary dish from Australia. Thinking of having Vegemite once I got back to a cosmopolitan area kept me walking. Finally, I saw a deck with a recreational vehicle on the bank. I reached the "big people" area, but there were no signs of people. They must have gone to fishing or something else. I knocked on the door, made some noise, and sang the song "Never Gonna Give You Up" at full volume, but no one came. I squinted into the horizon. It seemed as if there was a boat on the lake. "Is this Lake Michigan, actually?" I thought.

I had no idea where Burlington, Wisconsin was. It could be a next to Lake Michigan if it was on the east side of Wisconsin. It could be next to the Mississippi River if it was on the west side of Wisconsin. By the way, do you know that one can sink the entire Benelux countries into Lake Michigan? But why would anyone want to do that? I have never met people from Luxemburg nor Bergen, and my Dutch girl friends actually buy me drinks instead of going Dutch. (I am not sure about dudes.) But, anyway, there were no people that I could flag down for help. So, I left the site following a narrow road that the RV might have come from.

After I left the RV park near a lake, I finally reached at a wide road. Then I realized that I was just making a circle. I came back to the corn field that I landed in. My entire day was lost. I did not have water. I had not eaten all day. I needed to take a hot bath and get a massage with rose petals. I needed to get a manicure. If I were at an all-you-can-eat sushi place at this point, I probably could eat so much sushi that the restaurant would have to build a fleet to catch enough fish to satisfy me. Even with a conservative estimate, I probably could eat an entire six foot tuna by myself. I was that hungry. And I probably could drain the Lake Michigan. I was that thirsty. I waited for someone passing by on a road. But no one came. It seemed that the corn field was managed automatically by a central ultra big agricultural biz machine. I needed human contact. Automated sprinkler started chasing me in a field with water.

I was so tired, but I did not want to get wet. Also, I felt the mean coldness from this automatic sprinkler structure. It was not just an automated water sprinkler. It had definitely sinister streak to the machine. So, I ran. But the sprinkler hand kept reaching for me and its half a mile long hand kept chasing me. I had to run and run and escape from the corn filed, escaping from the domain of the sprinkler machine. I saw the woody area near the field. And I dashed into the woods where the sprinkler could no longer reach me. I was short of bless. Then I met Bob, my savior.

He asked me what heck I was doing with circus costume on. (He though I was shot out from a human cannon.) I explained that I must find a shop to fix my airplane to bring joy to the people in Brooklyn who would like to go to the Montello, Nevada. He said he would help me. He could take me to his brother in law's place and he can come and get my airplane with a winch from his jeep. Also, he can probably fabricate anything for me from his junk yard. Then it was my turn to ask him what he is doing in the woods with all the stuff on his truck. He said that his wife and her sisters have a craft project and that they need to have vines to make baskets. I said to him that is so admirable that there is art and craft movement in this area. I also told him that everyone should have knowledge of how to make baskets for catching fish in the lake. I also told him that basket is a good item to dunk in the ocean to catch an octopus and told him how my uncle catches octopus. (Well, he actually uses a clay pot instead of a basket, but he told me that I can use a basket too.)
He said he has nothing to do with devil fish, but I told him that octopus tastes good with balsamic vinegar. He said I was strange fellow and had peculiar sense of humor, so he would give me a ride.
Finally, I was saved, and the good thing was that he had bread pudding and a ruben sandwich to share with me. He also fed me a good chunk of Wisconsin cheese.
At this point I knew that I could not show up on time to fly the airplane from Brooklyn, but I thought, "At least I can repair my craft, Fiat CR.42 Falco, and fly again in a few days and my glorious adventure will continue."

In retrospective, I could not reach at airfield was a minor problem. The scheduled day of flight, there was a severe storm at the Floyd Bennett field. So, even if I was there I could not fly the airplane anyway. I spent the next days, watching Packers games with Bob, drinking Pop at Lucy’s, eating chicken wings with a lot of blue cheese, until my Fiat was fixed.
....... This was the story of my latest adventure, the episode of "Lost in Wisconsin". I am sure I will have a more tales to tell. Until then, I, Lieutenant Ishida, am over and out....

I was reading a blog, "Mira's list" about grants. (Link at the bottom)
Then I realized that last grant I applied was a rather questionable one.
Because they charge fee and did not ask for a proposal, and their website was too simple.
I cannot say for sure if they are not legitomate; for instance a lot of not for profit organization's web sites are not cutting edge. But not to be asked proposal for grant was rather strange to me.
In my past, I had participated juried shows with fee. Once I was in a show in Chelsea from such a juried call, I ended up with 100 artists in 200 sqf for one day show. I realized that we were just paying for rent for this gallery from our entrance fee. (They were not so subtle about in fact they don't care about the show.) Questionable people organize a show to collect entrance fee, or invite outsider for a group show to cover their cost of the show. I did not think about this can be true to foundation's, however, anyone can call themselves such and such foundation and have a website. I admit that I was not careful. Here is what Mira how to say. Chashama
All of chashama's visual art exhibit spaces are on the ground floor of a building, or are easily accessible from the street. Most of them were former retail stores, some have large street facing windows. chashama transforms these vacant spaces into temporary exhibit spaces; each one is unique in its layout and overall aesthetic. If you are planning a site-specific installation, it is recommended that you make a site visit before submitting an application. Applications will be reviewed three times a year for the spaces we currently have available. A few traditional exhibits will be selected "in reserve" should another space become available before the next application review period.
Though not a necessity, we recommend artists work with a curator to prepare their exhibits.
Exhibition Guidelines
Proposal materials required:
DIGITAL IMAGES ON CD (JPEG ONLY)
Images should not exceed 8"x10" 150 ppi or be below 5"x7" 150 ppi
Include prints as visual reference. (digital file image quality will be considered, not prints)
Prints should not exceed 8"x10"
NUMBERED IMAGE LIST
List: Artist, Title, Size, Media, Year and any other relevant notes about the work.
Traditional exhibits (works hung on the walls, sitting on the floor, or both)
At least 10 images of work that you wish to exhibit.
Installations (created off-site and re-assembled or installed in the space)
At least 3 sketches of the proposed site-specific installation (one sketch should be a floor plan)
At least 7 images of previous work. Do not include more than two slides from the same installation.
A detailed description of your installation, typed.
A list of materials you would use to create your installation (what it is made of, and any power tools or machinery used to construct it).
Site Specific Installations (for installations that could not exist in another space, and use the space itself as part of the work). Include the following along with the above proposal materials.
A typed (no more than one page) description of what makes the proposed work site-specific. Please include specific references to the structural or spatial elements of the site and how they have influenced your planning.

Diapason, a Brooklyn-based gallery
for sound art, is initiating an open call for the following:
1. Residencies
Composers, sound artists, and other qualified individuals are invited to submit proposals for working residencies utilizing Diapason's multi-channel sound environment. Diapason has two state-of-the-art multi channel sound systems (described below). Interested persons are invited to submit proposals for the use of the space to create work. Dates and times are flexible. Residents will receive a brief technical orientation but no technical assistance, unless the artist provides supplementary funding.
2. Curatorial
Emerging curators are invited to submit proposals for sound art presentations at Diapason. Any format is acceptable, from single artist retrospectives to group shows. Diapason is uniquely well-suited for presentation of computer based multi-channel sound work.
Curators are responsible for all aspects of the presentation, including finding personnel to assist with setting up and tearing down the show. They are also required to fundraise for their projects, though Diapason will provide limited advice and support and its status as a 501c3 not-for-profit corporation. Diapason will publicize events through our website and mailing list.
3. Programming
Interested persons are invited to submit proposals for single performances, screenings, installations, etc. Diapason offers its space and sound systems, plus limited technical assistance. It is the responsibility of the organizer to organize funding, collect door fees, etc., and to maintain the space. Diapason will publicize events through our website and mailing list.
This open call covers the time period September 1 2009 to July 31 2010.
Description of the space
Diapason consists of two rooms: the “gallery” contains a powerful 8 channel sound system with a subwoofer and is designed for focused listening. The floor is carpeted and there are pillows available as well as some seating (cushioned benches, folding chairs).
The “lounge” contains a 12 channel sound system (without subwoofer), as well as a 4 channel PA system and a Steinway Model “O” grand piano. It is set up in an informal way, with benches, chairs, carpets, etc. ranged around the space.
The multi-channel sound systems are connected to MOTU 896 (gallery) and 828 (lounge) audio interfaces. Resident artists are expected to bring a laptop with the necessary drivers.
There are two Shure SM-57 microphones, Mackie 1604 and 1202 mixers, a couple of small Behringer mixers and a stereo direct box. There are plenty of XLR cables.
There are 2 sets of track lights in each room. The number and position of the individual lights can be adjusted.
It is possible to use the walls for displaying objects, but this must be approved by the gallery.

Beginning June 26, individual CAA members may submit a session proposal for the centennial Annual Conference, taking place February 12, 2011, in New York. Proposals should cover the breadth of current thought and research in art, art and architectural history, theory and criticism, pedagogical issues, museum and curatorial practice, conservation, and developments in technology.
The Annual Conference Committee welcomes session proposals that include the work of established artists and scholars, along with that of younger scholars, emerging and midcareer artists, and graduate students. Particularly welcome are those sessions that highlight interdisciplinary work. Artists are especially encouraged to propose sessions appropriate to dialogue and information exchange relevant to artists.
